This workshop offers a primer into terminology and information related to the transgender community. This is a foundational, entry-level course that employs interactivity and employs co-learning to learn about a stigmatized and socially marginalized population. The workshop is segmented into introduction/norms, terminology, gender, transitioning, and barriers faced by the community. The only prerequisites are an honest willingness to learn, a desire to commit to social justice, and an open mind. The aim of the training is to improve knowledge of trans communities and build empathy.

Educational Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

Differentiate between gender and sex.

Develop a personal understanding of gender as it relates to themselves. Identify different facets of gender transition.

Demonstrate professional behaviors with members of the transgender community.

Identify social barriers that exist for the transgender community.

Be able to identify the impact of the role of gender on language.

Presenter Bio

Oliver is a public health advocate and researcher committed to social, economic, racial, gender, and Deaf/disability justice and equity through legislative development, advocacy, and strategic action regarding social determinants of health for marginalized populations. Oliver currently is pursuing a Masters in Public Health at UC Berkeley. Previously, Oliver worked at Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund and New York Legal Assistance Group, working towards comprehensive policy and litigation on behalf of LGBTQ youth within child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Oliver is also a veteran communications team member with Trans Lifeline, the only crisis hotline run by trans people for trans people. Oliver’s work regarding social determinants of health has been published with Teen Vogue, Huffington Post, The Advocate, International Journal of Transgender Health, and more.
