Based on the work of Dr. Brené Brown, shame and vulnerability are explored in the context of the interpreting world. The most common shame experience for interpreters is uncovered, followed by real-talk about our responsibility to the community. This workshop is designed to maximize learning with the use of retrievals, repetition, spaced practice, interleaving, small groups discussions, and fun. With a sprinkle of humor, puzzles, and playing with Disney characters, participants will learn the recommended 4 C’s to embrace vulnerability.
Jana is a certified hearing interpreter who embraces vulnerability in her daily work. She has a passion for people and fostering relationships as well as teaching, mentoring, and learning. Jana is a current student in the Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies and Communication Equity (MAISCE) program at St. Catherine University, and a graduate from UW-Milwaukee’s Interpreter Training Program. Jana joined her first conference interpreting team in 2014 and has embraced teaming with a variety of colleagues across the nation ever since, both in-person as well as virtually. This experience, along with her coordination of services at Madison Area Technical College, allowed Jana to notice how vulnerability impacts the group’s ability to thrive. When presenting, her workshops are interactive and activity-based, designed to enrich the experience of learning with aspects of love and laughter sprinkled in each session.
