Event Details
Building on intrapersonal skills developed in Workshop 1, this session explores managing emotions within interpersonal relationships while interpreting. Through group discussions, role play, and studying interpreting models, participants will gain strategies for enhancing social awareness, managing relationships, and applying emotional intelligence while bridging meaning between consumers.
Educational Objectives:
- Recognize emotional responses using body-based cues (Remembering)
- Analyze how thoughts, beliefs, and biases trigger emotions (Understanding)
- Apply strategies to monitor and articulate emotional reactions (Applying)
- Demonstrate emotional awareness in interpreting scenarios (Analyzing)
- Formulate a plan for ongoing development of self-insight (Creating)
- Assess personal growth areas related to emotional awareness (Evaluating)

Presenter Bio
Dr. Joseph C. Hill is an Associate Professor in the Department of ASL and Interpreting Education and Associate Director of the Center on Culture and Language at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institutes for the Deaf. His research interests are the socio-historical and -linguistic aspects of Black American Sign Language and the American Deaf community’s attitudes and ideologies about existing signing varieties. He is also a certified Reiki master and an Embodied Imagination dreamwork practitioner who specializes in life management and personal transformation. Link: www.josephchill.com
Sarah Wheeler is an accomplished American Sign Language/English interpreter and (Child of Deaf Adults) Coda author with over 16 years of experience in the field. She is recognized for her expertise in ASL/English interpreting and has presented at national and international conferences. Sarah holds a B.A. in Business Management, a Certificate in Nonprofit Management, an M.Ed in Interpreter Pedagogy, and a Master’s in General Psychology. Her educational background gives her deep insight into effective communication and emotional intelligence in interpreting.
Passionate about advancing her field, Sarah remains dedicated to research on enhancing connections between diverse communities. She is committed to promoting collaboration and unity, values that are reflected through her writing, emotional intelligence and interpreting research, and work as an interpreter.
