It has been estimated that as much as 90% of communication is non-verbal. Our body language and facial expressions all add meaning to our expressions. ASL uses non-manual morphemes,
spatial references, and other phonological processes. How can these visual non-manual morphemes, modulation, intonation, and spatial references be conveyed to someone with little or no vision? This workshop will review the grammatical divergence between Visual ASL and Tactile ASL.
Participants will practice research-based strategies for implementing the appropriate modifications to our sign production, effectively convey implicit and explicit visual contextual information to Deaf-blind consumers tactually.
Applying techniques learned in this workshop, we will provide the Deaf-blind with equal access to semantically rich content, increasing opportunities for fulfilling interactions and empowerment.
Educational Objectives:
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Identify visual contextual information that requires production modification for Deafblind.
2) Describe effective modification techniques when interpreting from Visual ASL into Tactile
ASL (TASL) to Deafblind consumers.
3) Produce semantically rich TASL interpretations while maintaining the spirit and intent of the source message.
