Interpreters must have a strong command of interpreting tools to work effectively; how those tools are leveraged impacts everyone’s communicative autonomy. This is especially true when working remotely. How interpreters advocate for best practices, strategically mediate, and respond to technology dynamics can differ from what is done when working on-site/in person. During this workshop, we will identify the necessary tools and strategies for successful VRI encounters that uphold communicative autonomy and ultimately, effective communication for all parties.
After this workshop, interpreters will be better:
Equipped to identify, evaluate, and have the tools necessary to navigate VRI
Best partner with all the stakeholders so that effective communication happens!

Danielle Meder is a nationally certified ASL interpreter with over 15 years in VRS and video remote interpreting as an interpreter and operations leader. She completed the Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting program at RIT-NTID in 2017. Danielle is a licensed trainer and is currently co-authoring a textbook, The Remote Interpreter International due out in Fall 2022, for Cross Cultural Communications. Danielle is passionate about advocating for quality and effective language access, supporting the advancement of interpreter training for spoken language interpreters, and supporting the communicative autonomy of all! Currently, Danielle works for Martti by UpHealth, a telehealth language solutions organization.
