Nic Zapko is currently working as a Deaf Interpreter and Deaf Mentor. Starting in 2006 she began her work as Co-Facilitator and Co-Director of Storyblend with Patty Gordon. This lead Nic into the profession of the mentoring and interpreting world. Storyblend is an immersion program focusing on developing Hearing interpreters and Deaf mentors by enhancing their knowledge and building a bridge between the two worlds. In 2009, Nic worked in the Language Mentor Program at Sorenson and was promoted to full time Program Manager to provide extended training. This included development of training for video interpreters to improving their knowledge and confidence with the skills they possessed. Currently, she is the Distance Learning Program Manager at Sorenson responsible for development, training, and webinars. Last Year Nic immersed herself into more Deaf Interpreting roles, this has proved to be a beneficial role for Nic as a Deaf customer and Deaf Interpreter. She can understand both sides of the equation.
Her style of mentoring is to engage, to develop and maintain a positive relationship. She focuses on the language development and skills by viewing your work, Nic guides and works with you to analyze it. Nic shares her strengths and ability to develop an ASL to English and English to ASL picture in your head. Also, on your comprehension of messaging to be able to interpret it. When Nic is not working she enjoys time with nature, her backyard campfire, swimming, being outside.
