Event Details
In this session, we will discuss biases related to gender & sexual diversity, as well as how these biases, both conscious and unconscious, can have a bearing on the interpreted session. These topics will be explored through the lens of interpreting ethics, including the RID Code of Professional Conduct, NCIHC Code of Ethics, and the AAITE Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Education, among other ethical frameworks. Participants will have an opportunity to consider how queer and 2SLGBTQIA+ mental and physical health is impacted by stigma. Participants will also consider to what degree they have an ethical responsibility to either support wellbeing, or prevent harm in interpreted sessions. The main ethical concepts to be discussed are: beneficence & non-maleficence, respect, professionalism, impartiality, and accuracy. We will also explore the physicality of impartiality, and how our facial expressions, body language, tone, reflexes, and even physiological reactions can impact our ability to remain neutral, especially in gender-affirming medical care settings. Because lack of familiarity with gender-affirming care and related procedures can contribute to breakdowns in not only accuracy, but impartiality, we will also explore medical procedures and terminology that might come up during interpreting encounters with gender expansive clients.
Educational Objectives:
– Recognize how interpreting for diverse communities intersects with our professional ethics, as well as the impact societal language and biases have on the gender, sexual, and alternative lifestyle communities
