Event Details

This workshop analyzes the technical and power dynamics of dental settings from a Deaf dentist perspective. Participants will master specialized terminology and chair-side positioning while evaluating how the clinical environment impacts patient autonomy and informed consent.

Educational Objectives:

After taking this workshop, participants should be able to:
1. Demonstrate ASL signs and classifiers for common dental instruments and procedures.

2. Identify effective positioning to maintain sightline during active dental treatment.

3. Analyze how the reclined position and medical paternalism affect Deaf patient.

4. Apply strategies to ensure the Deaf patient remains the primary communicator when physical movement is restricted.

Presenter Bio

Michael Korleski, DDS is a clinical Assistant Professor at UMN School of Dentistry. Specialist in Special Care Dentistry focusing on disability advocacy, medical complexity, and health equity. Committed to treating patients with dignity and training the next generation of inclusive providers. Minnesota outdoors enthusiast.
