Event Details
This presentation will focus on the roles played by hearing people with various levels of involvement in the Deaf community. We will explore the meaning behind the three terms: Deaf Heart, Allyship, and Allophilia, and the process a person may go through to acquire one of these labels.
Educational Objectives:
1. Describe the impact the three terms have on the Deaf and Hearing Community.
2. Explain the history of all three terms.
3. Identify different situations of terms play role in Deaf Community.
Presenter Bio
Ben Jarashow, a California native, graduated from Gallaudet University in 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies. He obtained his Master’s degree in Deaf Studies: Cultural Studies in 2006, also from Gallaudet University. His Master’s thesis focused on developing criteria for a better quality of ABC storytelling. He lives in Rochester, New York with his wife, Kat, their children, Boone, Cypress, and Wilder.
