This comprehensive workshop explores the study of what is needed for an interpretation experience in a religious experience. Students will review the structure of a religious experience. Discuss team interpreting plans. Learn religious interpreting etiquette and ethic. Discuss the differences between interpreting Scriptures, The Biblical Teaching, i.e. Homily, Sermon, Message, etc., as well as multiple kinds of Sacred Songs. Understand how to incorporate ASL principles i.e., Classifiers, syntax, appropriate grammar, in religious content. Students will review the history of Deaf persons and religious experiences. Students will have opportunities of religious vocabulary review, receptive skills drills, voicing exercises, as well as other interactive activities. The students will review the most common idioms in a religious experience and best approach them to interpret.
Educational Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants & students will-
– Understand the Interpreting Code of Ethics in a religious environment
– Review of Religious Vocabulary
– Understand team interpreting
– Review classifiers and understand the usage relating to Scriptures and songs sung in worship experiences
– Fingerspelling and receptive practice drills
– Understand how to incorporate ASL sentence structure, syntax, and grammar
– Understand the dynamics of a religious experience
– Interactive activities, questions & answers, complete a survey/poll
– Other related topics as needed by the facilitator
Presenter Bio
DOMINIQUE G EVANS, is a licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist, a licensed psycho-therapist, a Certified Deaf American Sign Language Interpreter, and known in the religious community as a Bible Scholar, who provides clinical mental health services privately and to local hospitals and outpatient programs, primarily for dually-diagnosed clients, in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area. Dr. D. as she is lovingly called, also offers American Sign Language (ASL) instruction, for all age groups and proficiency levels, with a focus on religious interpreting and musical performance; in churches, colleges, seminaries, to include, Wesley Theological Seminary in D.C. and senior citizens’ facilities, locally and abroad. Dr. D. conducts train-the-trainer sessions as well.
Dr. D has several degrees, one of which includes clinical psychology, additional postgraduate credits at the University of Maryland and more than 35+ years of experience as a Clinical Addiction Specialist. Dr. D can focus on the relationship between addiction and instituting coping techniques and mechanisms to help clients decrease physical and psychological symptoms. Dr. D’s’ principal areas of specialty include cognitive therapy, mental/physical applications of modern therapeutic practices, using specific components including humor, empathy, coaching, encouragement, and empowerment techniques with the objective of cultivating behaviors that support resilience and recovery. Also, creating alliances between the Deaf and Hearing communities comes naturally to Dr. D. She is highly sought after to serve as a keynote speaker, wellness coach, and a Deaf Ministry mentor. She has traveled extensively throughout the country, to the Holy Land in Jerusalem, the Caribbean and Haiti to aid in bridging-the-gap between the Hearing and Deaf communities by providing training and facilitating annual workshops. Her ministry is worldwide.
Dr. D was raised in the south and enjoys good food, great weather, and warm hospitality. She relocated to the Washington, D.C./Maryland area to attend college and became a member of the historic Metropolitan Baptist Church, of Washington, D.C., under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Beecher Hicks, Jr., senior pastor emeritus and began her tenure as President of the Deaf Ministry, where she still serves, in their new location, in Largo, Maryland. Dr. D serves as a teacher in the Adult Sunday School ministry and a member of (PUSH-CIA), the early morning Prayer ministry, and offers clinical support in the (IAMA) counseling and , IAMA, the clinical wellness & empowerment ministry, as well as clinical support for the Caregivers ministry.
Dr. D. travels the country and abroad educating and empowering Deaf Ministries in the areas of religious interpreting, Deaf Ministry development, and outreach, stressing the importance of Deaf inclusion and diversity.
Dr. D also owns and manages her own wellness planning business, Create the Vision Source, LLC, that advocates Deaf education and ministry, She has been trained to speak/ using her “voice” and has a history of being sought after and engaged to speak at numerous events, celebrations and conferences, empowerment workshops, throughout the country.
Dominique’s personal interests include traveling, exercise, playing volleyball, and entertaining family & friends. She aspires to creatively educate, enlighten, equip, empower and encourage all of the people she connects with, so they are able to express themselves freely, effectively communicate, and to live productive lives, to fulfill their mission and calling ─ on Purpose!
