Event Details
In this session, we will take a deeper look into the various identities within the gender and sexuality gradient, as well as briefly introduce different dynamics, structures, and roles within relationships. We will also learn terminology that surrounds those various communities and identities, outlining a descriptivist approach to research in working languages. Special considerations for interpreting for these communities and identities will be examined. We will discuss not only the impact our language (spoken or signed) can have on the individuals we interpret for, but also our interpreting colleagues.
Educational Objectives:
-Describe the difference between sex and gender, two terms which have historically been conflated by dominant cultures to oppress sexual and gender minorities.
– Recognize various identities within the gender and sexuality gradient, many of which are subject to erasure by the dominant culture that perpetuates cisheteronormativity.
– Explain how to use a descriptivist approach to research relevant terminology, an approach which minimizes the risk of perpetuating oppression against these identities.
– Integrate the nuances of language relating to gender and sexual diversity into their interpreting practice, enhancing accuracy and reducing oppression through language.
