This is an excellent question. Each bullet below describes important rules of etiquette to follow:

1.)  The most important thing to remember is to speak directly to the Deaf client when addressing him/her. Avoid looking at the interpreter and saying “Please tell (insert Deaf client’s name)…”

2.)  Please make eye contact with the Deaf client. Remember the Deaf client will be watching the interpreter but will appreciate receiving the eye contact nonetheless.

3.)  Speak naturally and at a normal pace. If the interpreter or Deaf client needs the pace adjusted, they will request it. Otherwise, it is best to be natural and have the appointment conducted at a comfortable pace.

4.)  One person should speak at a time. It is impossible for an interpreter to interpret simultaneous speakers.

5.)  Do not ask an interpreter to omit any portion of the conversation. The interpreter’s ethics require that they interpret all communication that occurs including side conversations and other environmental sounds exactly as heard. If a conversation needs to happen without the Deaf client, it is best to separate from the Deaf client and interpreter and conduct it in private.

6.)  For any questions one may have, it is best to ask the Deaf client. The interpreter will facilitate the conversation.

7.)  While speaking, please avoid unconscious behavior that may hinder lip-reading, such as chewing on a pencil, looking downwards, or covering one’s mouth. While one should not be expected to shave beards or mustaches, do be aware that they make lip-reading difficult.

8.)  Remember that nodding means yes, and shaking head means no.

9.)  Facial expressions and gestures are fine.

10.)  Keep commentary short and to the point.
