You just finished interpreting a teamed assignment, and the other interpreter turns to you and asks if you have any feedback. Do-do?? Is your initial response to create space for conversation about the work? Are you inclined to tell your team about the awesome depiction they incorporated? Share the minor detail they omitted? Offer an alternative for a concept that could have saved them some time? Or do you reply with “Feedback? No, you did great!”
There are several ways to approach opening a discussion about our work and then navigating that relationship, whether it’s a one-time interaction or the start of a long-term professional partnership. In this workshop, we will share ideas for initiating and developing note-sharing relationships with colleagues, and demonstrate what we usually call “doing notes.”
We will also offer practical ways to analyze and discuss interpreted work. Because there are so many elements to what we do as interpreters, this workshop will offer categories for interpretation analysis, as well as examples from interpreting samples. Because we all know that “it depends,” we will demonstrate options for analyzing interpretations by reviewing target messages as stand-alone utterances, comparing them to source messages, and brainstorming alternatives for various purposes. We will also provide some hands-on practice. Don’t worry, no group work 😉
Brianna and Kiva have been teaming together since 2021, and they thoroughly enjoy sharing notes and discussing their work together. They decided that other interpreters might be interested in learning about the best practices they’ve accumulated regarding notes, in both new and existing relationships with colleagues. And this workshop has given them a good excuse to create hands-on practice activities for others that have benefited them as well!
Educational Objectives:

Presenter Bio
Kiva Bennett (PhD, NIC) is a Florida native, now living in Washington, DC. She has been interpreting since 2012, and holds a PhD in linguistics from Gallaudet University. In addition to interpreting, Kiva enjoys research, beach camping, and nerding out about personal finance. She periodically gets lost down various rabbit holes trying to find ways to enhance her skills. Upon surfacing, she’s been known to say, “Hey, I bet other interpreters would love to know this stuff too!” And a workshop is born.
Brianna McCormack (NIC) thrives in collaborative interpreting environments, and has a passion for learning and growing with colleagues. She is a New York native, drawn to Washington, DC to attend Gallaudet University. After completing her B.A. in ASL/English Interpreting from Gallaudet, she settled into her interpreting career in the DMV area. She enjoys weekend trips to the Shenandoah mountains with her Australian Shepherd, and trying out new restaurants in DC with friends. Brianna finds value in talking about “the work” and appreciates any opportunity to share her practices with the community.
