As interpreters, we encounter discrimination against Deaf consumers more often than we would hope. Whether it occurs while we are actually interpreting, or when interacting with our Deaf friends and colleagues, we are often confronted with opportunities to advocate. Whether it be in a conversation with a Deaf consumer, service provider, employer or friend, we often do not how to respond accurately or ethically, nor are we aware of the possible consequences of where our intervention may lead.
Participants will work with real life scenarios of discrimination, discuss the options for responding, potential consequences of the involvement, and strategies for how and when to approach and intervene with assistance. Special attention will be given to suggested language for explaining Deaf people’s rights to communication access.
